Minute 0–5: stop the backup if you can, then stop moving
The instinct to grab towels and start soaking up sewage water is the wrong first move. First:
- If it is still actively backing up, do not try to unclog it from your side. A snake or plunger pushed into a backed-up drain can force more sewage back into the house. If a plumber is on the way, wait. If not, use the main sewer cleanout in the basement or yard to relieve pressure — but only if you know where it is and how to open it safely.
- Stop using every fixture in the house. No toilets, no sinks, no showers, no washing machine, no dishwasher. Every drop of water that goes down a drain right now adds to the backup.

Minute 5–20: protect yourself if you must enter
If you must enter the affected space — to shut off power, to retrieve critical items, to see the extent — at minimum:
- Rubber boots that come above the water line. Not rain boots. Actual chemical/waste boots if possible; heavy rubber otherwise. Old shoes or boots you can throw away afterward.
- Waterproof gloves, elbow length preferred. Nitrile or heavy rubber. Never touch anything with bare hands.
- N95 mask minimum, N100 preferred. Sewage aerosolizes; even without visible spray, you are breathing it.
- Full clothing coverage. Long pants tucked into boots, long-sleeve shirt. Everything gets bagged and washed separately (or discarded) when you exit.
- Nothing in your hands going in. No phone, no papers, no anything you want to keep uncontaminated. Take photos with a phone in a sealed plastic bag if you must.
Rinse boots in hot water and bleach solution when you exit. Bag your clothes separately from other laundry. Wash your hands with hot water and soap for at least 60 seconds, then again. This is not overkill; this is the standard.

The order:
- Emergency restoration crew first. - Plumber second, once the crew is dispatched. A licensed plumber needs to identify and clear the blockage causing the backup.
